Educational Facilities
The School of Nursing is located in the Ella C. Mills Building. It contains classrooms, laboratories, computer facilities, administrative and faculty offices. Students attend classes within the school or on the campus of an affiliating college or university.
The Louise A. Mershon Library, located in the school of nursing, contains current books, journals, computers and audiovisual programs on all aspects of nursing. Information services such as reference, and interlibrary loans are provided by the librarian. The hospital's health science library is also available for student use through a collaborative arrangement with the medical librarian.
Students have areas available for rest, relaxation and study, which include a lounge, kitchen facilities and vending machines. Meals are the responsibility of the student. The hospital cafeteria is available to students.
Mountainside Hospital is the primary clinical facility for the correlation of theory to practice for required nursing courses. Selected community agencies provide a broad range of additional learning experiences to meet the curriculum objectives.
Computer Facilities
Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing provides students with additional learning experience through the use of comprehensive computer facilities. Students are oriented to computer resources. The computer laboratory, located within the school of nursing, enables the student to reinforce theory through the use of various software programs. Internet educational resources are also available to students.
Financial Assistance
A comprehensive financial aid program is offered by Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing. A Financial Aid Officer is available for consultation and assistance.
Health/Health Insurance
The purpose of the health program is to assess the health status of each new student and to provide work related urgent care to the ill or injured student. Each nursing student is responsible for his/her own health and hospital insurance coverage. Neither the School of Nursing nor Mountainside Hospital is responsible for payment of charges incurred due to student's illness or injuries. Use of the Emergency Department will be billed to the student. The Occupational Medicine Service (OMS) at Mountainside Hospital is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Nursing students are eligible for all OMS services that are related to their activities as a student
in a Mountainside Hospital program. The student health policy is described in the Student Guidebook.
Accident Insurance Program
All students are enrolled annually in a mandatory accident insurance plan that covers accidental injuries sustained while the student is participating in or attending an activity exclusively organized, sponsored and supervised by the School of Nursing.
Counseling
Faculty, community and college resources are available to assist
students with academic, health, and personal counseling needs.
Orientation
An orientation program is held for all incoming students prior to the official opening of the school. All students are required to attend.
Vacation and Holidays
The School of Nursing observes six holidays. A spring break and summer vacation are planned. A school calendar is published annually in the Student Guidebook.
Transportation
Students are expected to provide transportation, at their own expense, to and from planned educational experiences at affiliating agencies.
Background Checks
A criminal background check is required for all students prior to the first clinical experience. This requirement is in keeping with JCAHO mandates with respect to persons interacting with patients as a part of the healthcare team. Background checks will be performed by TABB, Inc. at the student's expense.
The results of the background check will be forwarded to the School of Nursing and will be available to clinical rotation sites.
Professional Liability Insurance
All students are enrolled annually for Professional Liability Insurance coverage.
Parking
Parking is available for all students for a fee.
Religion
A non-sectarian chapel, located in the hospital, is available to patients, employees and students of all faiths. Hospital chaplains are available for counseling. Churches of most denominations are located within a short distance of the school.
Student Faculty Coordinating Committee
This standing committee of the Faculty Organization consists of students, faculty and administration. The purpose of the committee is to provide a forum for students to discuss matters of mutual concern and to plan school activities.
Student Bill of Rights and Responsibilities
A Student Bill of Rights and Responsibilities has been adopted by the Student Faculty Coordinating Committee and approved by the student body and Faculty Organization. A copy can be found in the Student Guidebook.
The Student Nurse Association
The Student Nurse Association (SNA) of Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing is a constituent of the New Jersey Nursing Students (NJNS) and the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). Membership is open to currently enrolled student nurses.
Drug Free Policy
Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing is committed to establishing and maintaining a drug and alcohol free environment. This policy is mandated by 'The Drug-Free Work Force Act of 1988.' The policy must be reviewed and signed by each student annually. A copy of this policy can be found in the Student Guidebook and in the Faculty Handbook.
Student Records Access
Under the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (P.L. 93-380) student records are available to the student for review. Written request to review one's records must be made to the Director of the School of Nursing. FERPA policies are available for review on request.
